Android phones lose photos in a few common ways. You delete the wrong album, a phone update goes wrong, or a cleaning app removes files it should not. Sometimes the photos are not even deleted. They are just hidden in a folder you rarely open.
This guide covers photo recovery from Android phone storage, step by step. It starts with the free places to check, like trash folders and cloud backups. Then it covers Android data recovery software for photos that are no longer in any trash or backup. You will also learn why some deleted photos cannot come back, which most guides do not explain.
Before You Start, Use Your Phone as Little as Possible
A deleted photo stays in your phone storage until new data takes its place. Every new photo, app update, or download can write over it. So until you finish recovery, avoid taking photos, installing apps, or downloading files. Turning on airplane mode also stops apps from saving new data in the background.
Do not install a recovery app on the phone itself. The install can overwrite the very photos you want back.
Check If Your Photos Are Hidden, Not Deleted
Before you try any recovery, make sure the photos are really gone. Android has a few features that move photos out of your main view without deleting them.
- Archive in Google Photos. Archived photos disappear from the main Photos tab. Open Google Photos, tap Collections, and open Archive.
- Locked Folder in Google Photos. Photos in the Locked Folder only show up after you unlock it with your PIN or fingerprint. You can find it in the Collections tab.
- Hidden albums on Samsung. In the Samsung Gallery app, open the Albums tab, tap the menu, and look for the option to show hidden albums.
- A different Google account. If you use more than one account, tap your profile picture in Google Photos and switch accounts. Your backed up photos may be in the other one.
One more case catches many people. If you used Free up space in Google Photos, the app removed the phone copies of your backed up photos. Those photos are still in your Google Photos account online.
Method 1: Restore Photos from the Trash
Most Android gallery apps move deleted photos to a trash folder first. They stay there for a set number of days before the app removes them for good.
Google Photos
- Open Google Photos and tap Collections at the bottom.
- Open Trash.
- Touch and hold the photos you want back.
- Tap Restore.
Photos that were backed up stay in Trash for 60 days. Photos that were not backed up stay there for 30 days.
Samsung Gallery
- Open the Gallery app and tap the menu button with three lines.
- Tap Trash or Recycle bin, depending on your phone model.
- Tap Edit, select your photos, and tap Restore.
Samsung keeps deleted photos in the Gallery trash for 30 days.
Files by Google and Other File Managers
If you deleted photos from a file manager instead of the gallery, check its trash. In Files by Google, tap the menu, open Trash, select the photos, and tap Restore. Phones from Xiaomi, OnePlus, OPPO, and Motorola have their own gallery apps, and most of them have a Recently deleted album too.

Method 2: Restore Photos from a Cloud Backup
If the trash is empty, your photos may still be in a cloud backup. Many Android phones back up photos without the owner noticing.
Google Photos backup. Open photos.google.com on a computer and sign in. Anything you see there is safe, even if it is gone from your phone. To get a photo back on your phone, open it in the Google Photos app and tap Download or Save to device.
OneDrive on Samsung phones. Many Samsung phones can sync the Gallery with OneDrive. Open the OneDrive app or onedrive.com and check the Pictures folder. Also check the OneDrive recycle bin, which keeps deleted files for 30 days on personal accounts.
Other apps. Check Dropbox, Amazon Photos, or any other app you use for backup. Also search your chats in WhatsApp, Messenger, or email for photos you shared with someone.
Method 3: Use Android Data Recovery Software
If the photos are not in any trash folder or backup, Android data recovery software is the next step. It connects to your phone from a computer and scans the storage for deleted photos that have not been overwritten yet.
Stellar Data Recovery for Android is a good option because it runs on your computer instead of your phone. That means nothing new gets installed on the phone, which protects your deleted photos from being overwritten. It also does not need you to root your phone.
The free version lets you scan your phone and recover up to 10 photos or videos, each up to 10 MB. Most phone photos are well under 10 MB, so this covers a handful of important photos at no cost. Longer videos usually go over that size. If you need more files, you can see your photos in the preview first and then decide whether to buy the full version.
A few things to know before you start:
- It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8.1, and 7.
- It works with phones running Android 6 and later, including Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo.
- It can also recover videos, contacts, messages, and WhatsApp photos.
Turn On USB Debugging First
Your computer needs USB debugging to read the phone storage. Here is how to turn it on:
- Open Settings and tap About phone. On Samsung, also tap Software information.
- Tap Build number seven times and enter your PIN if asked.
- Go back to Settings and open Developer options. On many phones, it sits under System.
- Turn on USB debugging.
How to Recover Photos with Stellar Data Recovery for Android
- Download and install Stellar Data Recovery for Android on your Windows computer.
- Open it and select Photos as the data you want to recover.
- Connect your phone with a USB cable. When your phone asks to allow USB debugging, tap Allow.
- Click Scan and wait for it to finish.
- Preview the photos it finds, select the ones you want, and click Save.
- Save them to your computer, not back to the phone.
If the software does not detect your phone, try a different cable or USB port. Some phones also need a USB driver from the phone maker website.
Why Some Deleted Photos Cannot Be Recovered
Photo recovery from Android phone storage is harder than from a memory card or computer. Knowing why helps you set the right expectations.
New data took their place. Phones save data all the time, even when you are not using them. Messages, app updates, and cached files all fill free space. The longer you wait, the more likely your photos get overwritten.
The phone was factory reset. A factory reset on a modern Android phone erases the key that unlocks your data. After that, deleted photos stay locked for good, even if traces are still in storage. Cloud backups are the only real option after a reset.
The trash period ran out a long time ago. Photos removed from the trash months ago have usually been overwritten by normal phone use.
Photos on a removable SD card are a different story. Most SD cards do not clear deleted data right away, so recovery chances are often much better. You can take the card out and scan it on a computer with a card reader. This does not work if the card was set up as internal storage, because Android encrypts it.
How to Keep Your Android Photos Safe
A few minutes of setup now saves you from needing recovery later:
- Turn on backup in Google Photos. Open the app, tap your profile picture, and check that backup is on.
- Use Wi-Fi backup so large videos upload without using your mobile data.
- Do not use Free up space until you have checked that your backup finished.
- Be careful with phone cleaning apps. Some delete images they mark as duplicates or junk.
- Copy your most important photos to a computer or external drive every few months.

FAQs
Can I recover photos after a factory reset?
Only from a backup. A reset makes old data on the phone unreadable, so no software can bring it back. Check Google Photos, OneDrive, or any other backup you used before the reset.
Can I recover deleted photos without a computer?
Yes, if they are still in a trash folder or cloud backup. You can do Methods 1 and 2 right on your phone. For photos that are no longer in any trash or backup, you will need a computer.
Do I need to root my phone to recover photos?
No. Rooting is risky and can void your warranty. Tools like Stellar Data Recovery for Android work without root.
How long do deleted photos stay on an Android phone?
In the trash, 30 to 60 days depending on the app. After the trash empties, there is no fixed time. Photos can last a few days or disappear within hours, depending on how much you use the phone.
